theory about shipping [14 Apr 2008|10:47am]

I have decided that the Shep/Weir vs John/Teyla thing is not only because the two pairings involve the same guy.

They are primarily because the Shep/Weir fans are all over Elizabeth as the wonderfullest, bestest character evah. I haven't met a Shweir that didn't think that Elizabeth was the bees knees. If Elizabeth is someone's favourite character, chances are, they're a Shep/Weir.

By contrast, most of the John/Teyla fans are all over John as the wonderfullest, bestest character evah. Teyla isn't important - she's pretty much the female stand-in for the pairing, displayed in the way that most John/Teyla writers don't actually write Teyla... They write John with a female lover that goes by the name of Teyla but isn't actually Teyla.

One of the reasons that a lot of John-fans ended up in John/Teyla rather than Shep/Weir (or Shep/McKay) is because they don't have to contend against the Teyla-fans - because there are so few of them. The Elizabeth-fans and Rodney-fans are numerous, plentiful, and, above all, fannish. Which means the tide of fandom goes their way - particularly in relationship stories.

I will bet anyone a 20,000 word fic that you'll find that most John/Teyla fans are way more into John than they're into Teyla - and not just because John has more screen-time. Scrape down and you'll find that the chiefest offenders of Teyla-characterisation are those who are in love with John but haven't descended into writing themselves as OCs to be in a relationship with him.

Jtdialog ficathon [17 May 2007|12:23am]

This strikes me as a good time to bring the ficathon back to life. I suggest June 6th as a deadline, should be plenty of time.  Should we pick a theme? Any ideas?

Little question.

I've been working on some pieces based around the theme of teaching; Teyla teaching John about Athos, John teaching Teyla about Earth.

Does anybody ever feel like they're in danger of making Teyla seem overly ignorant in stories where she's visiting Earth? I mean, obviously Earth with all its sports, buildings, machines, crazy food and drinks would be overwhelming, but I keep getting the feeling I'm not handling her quite right.

It's never quite the same when the situation is reversed, because the things that Teyla would teach are more...tribal. Not quite the word I'm after, but cooking, ceremonies, things like that.

So, any thoughts? Anybody know what I'm talking about? Probably not because I'm making litte sense, but I just wanted to see if anybody had the same problem.

EDIT: The post has veered off into a conversation about whether Teyla is intelligent or not, which has been really interesting. I just want to clarify though; I felt my characterization of her in the story I'm working was off and therefor making her seem less than she is. Not the show, or the canon Teyla. I'm trying to sort out how I want her to react to Earth, so any discussion is greatly appreciated. Teyla kicks ass people, and we all know she has a good head on her shoulders!

Query [03 Apr 2007|06:40pm]

Anyone intending to join in/sign up for the auficathon challenge?

I have my reservations, not least of which is that I presently have 6-7 AU fics lying around, most of them half-written. And there's the SGA Big Bang challenge. Still, participating in a broad-ass ficathon means broader fandom exposure - particularly for John/Teyla.

I just don't know if it's worth it - if I can manage it.

Just a suggestion [02 Apr 2007|07:52pm]

While looking for fic to nominate for the Isis Awards a couple of weeks ago I remembered the "tennis fic" that allisnow and seldear created (about a year ago?). I was wondering how people would feel about starting up a round. Or perhaps a round-robin. One author writes a fic and the next uses some aspect of that story to write another one. I just think that it might be a good way to get some stories out on a regular basis. I'm thinking mostly of my own productivity here :P

Interesting Joe Mallozzi Blog Post [01 Apr 2007|11:07pm]

[ mood | cranky ]

Found this when I was surfing the GateWorld forums - from executive producer Joe Mallozzi's blog:

Anonymous #6 writes: “I was wondering if you'll be continuing showing the progression of Sheppard's and Teyla's relationship as you have been from season 3 into season 4?”

Answer: Oh, we’ll be continuing to show the progression of everyone’s relationship.

Le sigh.

Why can't the just give us a straight answer already?

random conversation starter? [01 Apr 2007|02:05pm]

[ mood | silly ]

So I remember reading a meta on John/Teyla a while back, and I think it was someone who doesn't usually write JT so I don't believe it was anybody here. But there was a comment that stuck with me and it was that (paraphrasing) there was a very short period of time in the beginning of the series when John and Teyla first met that starting a relationship of some kind would have been "easy", but that time has passed. She wasn't using this as an argument against JT, just an observation. And I thought I'd toss it out there as a possible conversation starter.

Or you can just ignore this. I won't be offended ;)
